Launching a website is an exciting time. It is the digital representation of your business. In today’s hyper-connected world, it should be a primary channel for conducting business. This series of posts covers our methodology for launching a website.
Part 1 – Shared Hosting
The cloud is all the rage these days and for good reason. Before the cloud, large websites would require teams of engineers and dedicated data center costs. The cloud has made running your own data center obsolete.
For websites just getting started the cloud is overkill. There is a steep cost for flexibility and it typically isn’t justified when a business is just getting started.
Enter Shared Hosting – an economical way to get your website online. Web hosting companies host multiple websites on the same server. The exact number of websites is unknown and not important for now. What is important is that your website is online and meets minimum response time requirements. Typically we demand that a server response time be less than 1 second and a full page load should be anywhere between 2-5 seconds, depending on the page complexity. For most small websites this is easily attainable on shared hosting.
The benefit of shared hosting is the cost: typically $5-$25 per month. This is always a fixed cost and you are never billed for CPU, disk or network usage. Contrast this with the cloud where you are billed for every bit consumed. The costs for cloud computing can very quickly spiral out of control. For most small businesses, sticking to your marketing budget is very important.
